A barrier is a hindrance, obstacle, obstruction and hurdle. A barrier can prevent a message from being heared or prevent a message from being understood.
General Communication skills e.g. use of technology
There are different types of barriers for the general communication and some of these are:
- Language used
- problems with technology
- Lack of Concentration
- Disabilities
- Diverese Audience
Language used
The listener becomes very easily bored because the language that is being used is too simple. The listener find the language too difficult to understand so the person might ask somebody for help with the words that they are stuck on or dont understand. The listener mightnt understand the technical terms like parts of a computer e.g. motherboard so the listener might ask somebody what a motherboard is? The listener becomes very figity and isnt concentrating as the terminology is too difficult or they cant understand what you are saying maybe they speak a different language than you. The Listener becomes bored and starts talking to someone else and starts a whole conversation while they are busy doing their work. When using informal language you audience will be teenagers and adults. When using formal language you will have to use this in front of your work colleagues.
Barriers in Interpersonal Communication.
There are different types of barriers for the interpersonal communication and some of these are:
- Bad Body Language
- Background Noise
- Negative Emotions
- Use of Negative Language
Lack of concentration.
A person can lose a lack of concentration by being sat down for too long – Without regular breaks for fresh air and it will clear their mind will start to lose concentration after roughly 15 minutes. Interaction between the speaker and his/her audience is not happening and if the speaker is not interacting with the audience, the audience do not feel involved and start losing interest and concentration as a result and if there is not enough writing this will also be a factor for the audience to lose patience and concentration.
Barriers in Written Communication.
There are different types of barriers for the Written communication and some of these are: - Spelling and grammar
- Document structure not well
Spelling and grammar. In written communication if there is any spelling errors people in the audience will think that you cannot spell and they will make you aware of your spelling mistakes.If there is grammar mistakes like no capital letters the audience will notice it and probably say to the person who is presenting their work that there is grammar mistakes but the person whos work is being presented should be checked for spelling and grammar mistakes before it is presented to an audience.
Doc. Structure
In the layout of the document there might be too much text for the person to read and understand.In the layout there might not be too many images used. Instead of using text you can use charts it might make the reader understand more if you are showing them a chart that is labelled. The chart or text that you have used may be too colourful for the person to read or look at. The font of the writing that the person has used maybe too small and people may not be able to read it and understand it.
